 Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Play Pause
Stop and Rewind

I just wanted to give you a little historical perspective. This is a picture of an article that appeared in the New York Times in August of 1963, which is 40 and a half years ago. The reason that I want to tell you about this is because this is when the American public first became aware of RDS, which at that time, was called Hyaline Membrane Disease. The reason that the American public became aware is because President Kennedy and his wife had a premature baby, and he didn't survive, and I am going to tell you a little bit about that baby in a few minutes. So the American public then began to appreciate that premature babies have difficulty with breathing and lung function.
